Artlantis 5 Sneak Peek: Preview Controllers

We are so close to the launch of Artlantis 5! Based on what we've seen thus far, it's hard to believe it can get any better. But look at what's behind the letter 'O' in R E V O L U T I O N...OH my goodness!

Handling shaders or simple textures in the preview or in the 2D window is easy. A preview controller allows you to move, resize, and rotate shaders and textures. A simple keyboard shortcut is all it takes to snap a shader or texture to the geometry automatically.

Just like shaders and textures, objects are handled with the same ease in the preview or in the 2D view. Rotate, move, resize or duplicate...everything is optimized! The objects can also be snapped onto edges.

A tantalizing new website appeared recently, along with a series of mysterious tweets and posts offering this compelling call to action: Get Ready for the Revolution! For Artlantis fans who have anxiously been awaiting word on the next release, your wait is over: Artlantis 5 is coming soon!

The website features a release date countdown timer, along with a series of letters that form the word "REVOLUTION." Over time, each letter will unveil sneak peaks of some of the exciting new features of Artlantis. The first letter, R, links to an eye-popping video of a new feature that many users are sure to appreciate: relief mapping. We witness a stone wall transforming from a flat texture mapped surface to a truly 3-dimensional surface with plenty of depth. The video is short but impressive, and succinctly illustrate the vast potential for this feature to be used on a wide variety of building materials that architects and designers specify on a regular basis.

Visit the new website and while there, be sure to sign up to for the email list so that you can learn about other exciting Artlantis 5 announcements.

Physical Camera and Automatic Light Adjustment in Artlantis 4

Introduction to the physical camera rendering option and automatic light adjustment option in Artlantis 4.

Thanks to its new automatic light adjustment feature, Artlantis dynamically balances the lighting levels in your scenes from dawn till sunset, and from outside to inside a building, and thus allows you to perform photo-realistic images and animations.

Automatic lighting adjustment has been available since the launch of Artlantis 3. With Artlantis 4.1, users can now choose to keep this setting or use a new feature called ISO/Shutter. ISO refers to the sensitivity of camera film, while the Shutter Speed refers to the length of time the camera’s aperture stays open when taking a picture.

Understanding the principles enables you to choose the one that suits you best.

Artlantis 4.1 - Using adapted Maxwell Render Shaders

In certain cases, to maximize the accuracy of renderings calculated with Maxwell Render engine, you may need to use adapted shaders. They are able to react properly to the engine's capacity. This is why you'll find specific Maxwell materials converted into Artlantis shaders right in the basic media Catalog.

simplebim® - IFC model with integrated information from the BIMobject Portal - BIMobject Talks!.mov

Software developer Datacubist demonstrates a new technology advancement in their IFC software simplebim together with BIMobject AB. simplebim is a smart BIM editor software that is used by BIM professionals to check, evaluate and edit IFC files.

With the new BIMobject™ integration in simplebim all real manufacturer specific content can be dragged and dropped from the IFC model in 3D to a viewer inside simplebim® to view all details of the actual product. This means that a huge amount of rich data, visuals, links to installation and maintenance instructions etc can be retrieved in simplebim®.

This is the first step in the collaboration between Datacubist Oy and BIMobject AB and it showcases a way to carry rich product information in the IFC model files (without actually having them in the file) and using cloud and web servers to present the data in a new smarter way.

Artlantis 4 - Productivity Improvements

Artlantis 4 incorporates a number of new features that greatly streamline the process of getting from unfinished 3D model to final rendering. A new Horizontal material projection method simplifies working with complex roof surfaces, automatically orienting the direction of all roof textures to line up with all soffit edges in one simple step. A new Explode by Mesh function automatically separates the different meshes of a model to simplify the material assignment.

A selection of multiple objects can now be edited at the same time. In the 2D view, a series of duplicated objects can be automatically positioned on the underlying surface using gravity. The batch rendering queue can be reorganized and filtered before starting the batch job.

If you've been looking for a better way to work, this video about the productivity improvements in Artlantis 4 will show you how it can be done. Ease of use has always been one of the core philosophies behind Artlantis, and this video makes it easy to see how Artlantis 4 has raised the bar yet again. Project set up in Artlantis 4 has been refined and simplified, and processes that previously took multiple steps have now been reduced to 1 or 2 steps. Enjoy!

Artlantis 4 - Performance Improvements

Artlantis 4 is faster than ever. The average rendering time is two times faster, and up to seven times faster if the project uses several Neon shaders. In order to better handle large projects, Artlantis is now optimized for 64-bit Macintosh and Windows environments.

Check out this video about the performance improvements in Artlantis 4. When it comes time to render the project, nothing is more important than speed, and Artlantis 4 really delivers where it counts.

Artlantis 4 - Quality Improvements

As in photography, color is an essential consideration in rendering. The new radiosity engine in Artlantis 4 improves images for better perception of colors, textures, and materials. Tone correction is a new post-process tool that allows users to lighten dark images or vice versa. A new Fresnel shader has been added to the library, which is particularly suitable for metallic car bodies. Transparent surfaces and a variety of other edits are now managed more easily in this new version, thanks to an improved method for selecting and handling multiple objects.

Check out this video about the quality improvements in Artlantis 4. Some of the most subtle but important changes fall under this heading. Collectively, these improvements result in a dramatic overall difference in the level of realism now possible with Artlantis 4.
